It seems like it doesn't matter what you get your new born for his first Christmas. I mean it seems it doesn't matter because they can't really differentiate from the wrapper or the toy.

But you know something it matters much.
A couple of things to consider
1. If it has sound make sure it has an off button some toys are very sensitive and will keep you up at night.
2. Make sure it's something he will love and cuddle with.

It might seem like much but it is better to buy a toy that there are growing into then to buy a toy that they are growing out of when you buy it.
